GT&T / Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship
Just as he had done in his native land, Barbadian Rogers Mayers in his Ford Focus
grabbed pole position after registering a stunning 33.60 seconds during time trials yesterday to relegate Guyana’s Mark Vieira in his Mazda RX 8 into second place after he produced a quick 33.70 seconds to set up an interesting showdown today in the final leg of the GT&T / Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Mayers, who boasted about coming here to smash the existing lap record he set last year was in no mood to entertain the opposition, but Vieira’s responded with an impressive time to set up a heart stopping confrontation with Jamaica’s David Summerbell Jnr, who clocked 33.78 seconds and will start just behind them on the second row of the grid.
In the Super bike category, Canada’s Kevin Graham returning after missing the two previous Meets in the Series was also in imperious form hammering down a blistering 35.044 seconds to claim pole ahead of the rejuvenated Carlos Rodrigues, who returned a time of 35.01, while Gregory Lopes starts just behind the two of them after clocking an impressive 35.930 seconds.
Points’ leader Stephen Vieira finished off the pace after registering an unimpressive 36.127 seconds, but seemed to be affected by a mechanical problem which he will obviously have to rectify to challenge the front runners.
No other results were available up to press time.
Barbados leads the points standing for the overall country title, while Summerbell Jnr. is in the ascendancy for the individual accolade.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Craig Atkinson speaking with Kaieteur Sport last evening said he is hoping for a top three performance, but admitted that the machine is experiencing some electrical issues which they will be working overtime to correct, before today’s rivalry.
He disclosed the bike is handling pretty well, but is not getting enough power to generate the speed necessary to challenge the top two in Graham and Rodrigues.
Rodrigues for his part said he was extremely pleased with his time and is looking forward to going one step better today.
“I feel confident, but at the same time just going out there on the track and having fun is what I’m looking to do,” he mentioned.
