Dear Editor,
Will the wiretapping PPP use the election season handout laptops to spy on the Guyanese people?
The PPP admitted it is spying on the Guyanese people. It is eavesdropping on the nation. The party is listening to our conversations, monitoring our texts, seeing what we watch on the internet and checking our emails. This same PPP created a new spy agency called the Central Intelligence Unit that, among its duties, is entitled to spy on the Guyanese people.
The fact that wiretapping is ongoing but it has not been used to prosecute anyone in court strongly leads to the suggestion that the PPP has been engaging in generalised and non-specific spying on the Guyanese people.
Wiretapping in developed nations is governed by strict codes of use and generally tends to lead to prosecution. The PPP is spying but not prosecuting anyone. That speaks volumes. The PPP is giving out laptops during election season in an atrocious attempt at high class bribery of the Guyanese people with their own tax dollars. I have already raised questions regarding the suspicious community service requirement attached to this laptop project. There is another question surrounding these election season laptops: will they be used to spy on the Guyanese people?
Will there be software on these laptops that enables the government to remotely access your laptops? Would these ICT Hubs where those unable to afford internet in their homes (which is most Guyanese) can attend and obtain internet have spyware and data tracking software operating?
Can I trust the PPP will not spy on me while I am using the internet at one of these ICT Hubs? After all, this is the same PPP that was ruling when the Roger Khan spying brouhaha broke. Were these laptops made with any innate vulnerability to allow easy access by the government wiretappers?
Can we really trust the PPP with this fibre optic cable from Brazil? Do we have to fear that the PPP government is creating a cyber file on each of us, which can be used against us?
Heaven help the Guyanese people if the PPP wins this election for I suspect it will use its draconian wiretapping and spying laws to become a true Big Brother spying on its own people. Will we become a nation with laptops we cannot even use for fear of being spied upon by our own government?
A country with computers that we paid for with our taxes but we are deathly afraid of powering on? A people living in fear of a technological device that was supposed to liberate us but instead imprisons us with fear?
It is my belief that these laptops were not given to us to enrich our knowledge. These laptops were given to us to enrich their knowledge of us, of how we view them, of who protests against them, of who condemns and mocks them and of who poses a threat to them.
Good luck with your new laptop. Will it be watching you while you’re looking at it?
M. Maxwell
