Dear Editor,
The more we live among mortal man, the more we learn to live with disappointment and human frailties.
My latest disappointment refers to Bishop Juan Edghill; a man who fought with me in the post 1992 period, against the arrogance and folly of the PPP, when that Party in government sought to destroy our Mash Celebrations.
Our rallies at Square of the Revolution and marches brought this government to its senses.
One PPP Minister told me, that they truly wished to dismiss Republic Day because it coincided with Burnham’s birthday. Of course, he was so wrong – victims of their own propaganda.
Now, perhaps for filthy lucre, the Bishop has gone full circle. His defence of his now infamous statement in the Chronicle, defending his blasphemy, by bringing the Lord Jesus into the bowels of earthly politics, is unforgivable.
Having decided to address an open air public political rally, one would have hoped to hear from the Bishop uplifting hymns to democracy justice – freedom and encapsulating the principles of decency and good words that would have enlightened this corner of God’s vineyard – Guyana. Instead, we heard from him an extremely despicable oration.
He is so wedded to the evil of his mentors that he seems blind, not giving himself a chance to seek, and be given forgiveness.
It is not necessary to set out the evidence to show how unfair, corrupt and immoral is the regime he has taken to his evangelical chest with bonds of steel.
He is betraying the lofty principles of Christianity, including the sanctity of marriage and family, for, when I asked him, as a religious leader if he ought not to chide President Jagdeo for his treatment of Ms. Varshni Singh, he knowingly did not complete their marriage, yet paraded her as ‘The First Lady’ in every corner of the globe.
It was at the Ocean View Convention Center in the presence of Pastor Ronald Mc Garrell, that I raised this matter. The Bishop responded by saying ‘such was a personal matter.’
How can this man administer holy matrimonial rites to ordinary people?
I read his utterly disgusting defense of saying, “if Jesus Christ came to Guyana, he would vote for this same Party”, the latter being a narco enterprise which sheltered the likes of Roger Khan and boasts a long list of unhappy events.
1 am not a preacher but I know enough of the Bible and history to remind Bishop Juan Edghill thus – when Jesus attracted many followers in North Palestine, these men and women were attracted by his interpretation of Jewish religious laws and warnings of the imminence of God’s rule replacing human rule. This caused strong resentment by the Jewish and Roman leadership and finally led to his crucifixion.
Dear Bishop, while there is life, there is hope for you. In the meantime, review the first four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They show Jesus not only as the Son of God, but one living a life devoid of material security. Mixing with the poor – (no Pradovilles or excessive benefits) suffered at the hands of the authorities (not a soup drinker).
Finally, the Bishop needs to return to the Beatitudes.
Matt 5: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
5: 6 Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.
Matt 6: 9 -13; after this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever, Amen.
Do not be another Esau and sell your birthright for a cup of soup. Genesis 25:27-34.
Finally, the good Bishop says, ‘he will not respond to ghosts.’ Since neither the Pastors who wrote, nor myself are ghosts, / look forward anxiously to a response.
Hamilton Green, JP
