A 54-year-old man shot his 33-year-old wife dead, in the Cuyuni/Mazaruni community of Kaikan on Wednesday night, before turning the gun on himself.
A police release identified the victims as Rita King-Mortimer and Paul Mortimer.
The release said that a firearm was recovered at the scene.
Kaieteur News understands that the slain woman had operated a shop in the hinterland community and that the motive for her murder stemmed from allegations of infidelity.
A team of investigators has been dispatched to the area.
The E and F division has recorded some 40 murders for the year. The figure exceeds the number of murders that occurred in the hinterland division during the entire 2009 and 2010. Close to 75 percent of these murders have occurred in mining communities.
