As the old adage goes, “Dis time nah lang time”, Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors must beware of Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ who are out to prove that it’s their time to shine.
The Caribbean neighbors will square off in the football jungle today at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence in a crucial 2nd round FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 Qualifying game that will decide which team from this group advances to Round 3.
The record speaks for itself with regard to the current standings with the ‘Golden Jaguars’ leading on 10 points (3 wins 1 draw) and the only unbeaten team in the group. They are ahead of the Trinis on 9 points (3 wins 1loss) while the other two teams in the group, Bermuda and Barbados are out of contention.
The Golden Jaguars have been hard at work over the past few weeks with a number of players based in England, Canada, USA and Trinidad and Tobago coming back to join with their locally based colleagues.
The presence of the Cort brothers (Leon & Carl) playing defence and forward is a major boost for the Guyanese with both players competing at the highest level in England; Carl, having played against Barcelona.
Their experience and professionalism adds depth to this side and along with the likes of Captain Christopher Nurse, Ricky Shakes, the Newton brothers (Howard and Jake), Christopher Bourne, Vurlon Mills who already has two goals to his credit, the elder statesman of the team, Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Ronson Williams who has been very good between the uprights will create the solidness that is needed in attack and defence to take the ‘Golden Jaguars’ to victory and the next round of the qualifying campaign.
The Technical staff charting the way is being led by Jamaal Shabazz who has been a tower of strength and inspiration to this side. He is ably assisted by Wayne Dover and Andrew Hazel in this department.
The Soca Warriors are here at full strength and have all to play for coming from behind in this group. Their quest for a win is being led by Captain Kenwyne Jones, Lester Peltier, Khaleem Hyland and Chris Birchall.
Their Assistant Coach Anton Corneal played against the Guyanese and scored a 68th minute goal which led T&T to a 1-0 win; the Trinis also won 4-0 the last time the two countries faced off in a World Cup qualifier in 1988. Soca Warriors’ Coach Germany’s Otto Pfister has also expressed confidence in his charges.
This time however, it’s a much different proposition with a confident and solid ‘Golden Jaguars’ lineup up for the challenge and aiming to win this clash to seal their place in the next round.
History beckons and the Guyanese fans are being urged to come out in their thousands to rally behind and with their Jaguars. Wear yellow to show your support is the call being made by the team.
Admission is $1,000 before and $1,500 at the gate. Tickets are on sale at the Kashif & Shanghai Office (Irving Street) and Ashmin’s Trading (High Street).
