GT&T / Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship
By Rawle Welch
Guyanese motor racing fans could feel assured that they are in for a real treat this weekend when the best exponents of speed in the Caribbean take to the South Dakota Circuit to showcase their exceptional skills against each other in an effort to be crowned overall and individual champions of the Region.
Yesterday during a special meeting held at the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) most of the foreign drivers and riders were unveiled to the media confirming their arrival for participation in what has been touted to be the most memorable weekend in the sport for some time.
Jamaica’s David Summerbell Jnr, who leads the individual points standing, fellow countrymen Doug Gore, Peter Rae, superbikers Stephan Chin and Adrian Blake, Barbadians Roger Mayers, Mark Maloney, Kurt and Mark Thompson were all present at the meeting yesterday.
Other important figures who attended the occasion included Heads of the three main participating countries in Hilary Jardine, President of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club, Adrian Mayers, Chairman of the Barbados Auto Racing League, Johnny Carpenter of the GMR&SC, Vice-President of the GMR&SC David Fernandes and Committee member Vishok Persaud.
Jardine in his remarks first revealed the size of the Jamaican contingent which he said included three cars and two superbikes, informing that despite the team’s small numbers, they are here to put on a good display for the fans, but promised that David (Summerbell) is here on a mission to retain the individual title.
He also sent out an ominous warning to super bike racer Guyana’s Stephen Vieira, who has been in irresistible form over the past two Meets, informing that Chin and Blake are not here merely to participate, but on a more serious assignment which is to revenge Vieira on his own home turf, before his fans.
With Gore not being allowed to compete in the CMRC, Jardine urged the Committee to organize a race that will present an opportunity for the local fans to see him in his Audi DTM race car which is easily the fastest machine in the Caribbean, but which specifications are far too superior to all the others thereby restricting him under the rules from participating in the championship.
Mayers in his presentation thanked the GMR&SC executive for affording them the opportunity to compete here, adding that they are confident of filling Red Jet (airline carrier) with enough trophies after capturing top honours come Sunday.
Mayers spoke of his understanding of the magnitude of pulling off a successful event such as the one they are here for, but promised that aside, they are going to be crowned country champions at the end of the day.
He told Summerbell that he will be a hunted man on Sunday, informing him that Roger Mayers and Mark Maloney will be right there with him.
Mayers also took the opportunity to introduce the future stars of the sport in the Thompson brothers Mark and Kurt, who will be competing in the lower categories.
In closing, he promised his League’s support for the GMR&SC in helping to keep the sport alive within the region.
Persaud responding on behalf of the Guyana said it is very typical for the host country to dominate, citing the occurrences in the two preceding host territories as overriding evidence of this scenario.
He was adamant that the prevailing circumstance will continue here in Guyana which has named its strongest possible team to defend home turf.
With the possibility of 10-15,000 fans anticipated to flock the South Dakota Circuit, fans are being asked to buy tickets early and get to the venue early as well to avoid the expected traffic congestion.
Meanwhile, tickets for the VIP Lounge has been going fast and those desirous of being part of this special experience are being advised to purchase tickets early.
Those with tickets to this specially gated area will have the luxury of seeing the races from the best vantage point, while being entertained throughout the day with the finest beverages, cocktails and sumptuous food as well as enjoying hourly drives to the pit area to interact with the competitors.
All this is being done at an affordable cost of $20,000 for adults, while children under-16 is $10,000 and those below the age of 6 are free.
