The Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) was plunged into mourning Wednesday night with the news
that its long-serving Treasurer, Franz Welch had succumbed to injuries he sustained in an accident Diwali night. He was the victim of a motor cycle crash.
Welch, who was employed at the European Union, joined AAG in January 2000 as a Committee Member and in August 2002 he was elected Treasurer. He served in that position until his death Wednesday night. He leaves to mourn a young daughter and wife.
Welch was born in 1978 and will be remembered as an avid athlete with his career blooming as a student of the Central High School. He formed part of an unbeatable 4x100m relay team that had included Deon Barker, Anton Francis and Kwame Caesar for the Atoms Athletics Club in the 90s.
Kaieteur Sport joins the AAG in expressing condolences to the family of the bereaved and hopes that they find comfort and strength in the Lord in these difficult times.
