Speaking with the some of the senior players of the Golden Jaguars team at the Raddison Suite, Queenstown, Kaieteur Sport was informed that they are ready for the challenge against Trinidad and Tobago’s team, ‘The Soca Warriors’.
The players are confident in their upcoming match against the Twin Island country and will be aiming to conquer them on home soil at the Guyana National Stadium tomorrow.
The Captain, Christopher Nurse was one of the players who enlightened Kaieteur Sport about the team’s present state and their preparation for the game.
According to Nurse the leadership displayed by the players is excellent and with that, thinks that the team have a good chance in excelling against Trinidad and Tobago, “…we have good leadership in the players who are also experienced and we have a really good chance of winning this game,” he said.
He further notified that his captaincy in the game would not mean anything special but a member, since it is all the players that have to perform their duties which will bring the nuts to the table.
Nurse also commended the overseas players as they speedily synchronized with the Golden Jags. “They managed to get accustomed to the temperature…and were able to fit in fast with the team…they are very good and have the experience required for the game…our training is very competitive …there’s a lot of tackles running around and a lot of passion and aggression as everyone is fighting to earn a spot.”
Both Ricky Shakes and Leon Cort said that they will be bringing their experience and determination to aid in overcoming Trinidad and Tobago Friday night.
Shakes, the right side mid-fielder declared that his talent and speed along with his determination, which will be displayed on the field, will assist in Guyana winning the group.
He continued, “We are really looking forward for this game on Friday and we know what the game can do for Guyana since we are playing to qualify for the World Cup.”
Shakes, who once played for Trinidad, said that he would definitely like to do well against Trinidad and it will be a battle for not only the Golden Jaguars but also for him.
Cort also plans to use his European experience he gained while he was playing football in Europe.
Cort said that they are presently fine tuning in their training sessions since a win is needed badly by Trinidad and Tobago.
Nurse also disclosed that this crucial game against Trinidad would be a game of high intensity and it would mean a lot to the younger players since it would be the biggest game they have ever played, “…qualifying for the world cup in Brazil in 2014 for the younger player would be the biggest game they have ever played…the next games after this will be with Mexico, Costa Rico and El Salvador and everyone wants to play against them…so that’s motivation.
But the game with Trinidad and Tobago would be an added motivation because there is so much rivalry between Guyana and Trinidad…and you would find that there is a bit of disrespect from Trinidad from the way they speak about Guyana…so they are of the view that they will beat us.”
The crucial match with Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago is slated for Friday at the National Stadium from 8PM.
The players are urging Guyana to wear the colour yellow to support their team; with this a hostile atmosphere will be created for the Trinidadian supporters.
