Two gunmen on a black CG motorcycle attacked and robbed a miner, Kenneth Anthony Joaquin, of $5 million, after shooting him in the left leg before they fled on a motorcycle. The driver of the grey Toyota Allion was taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station for questioning.
The Allion was traveling north on Hunter Street, West Ruimveldt yesterday morning. It stopped at the traffic lights at Mandela Avenue when the gunmen struck.
The victim has since been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The gold miner who works in the Arakaka, North West District (NWD) would normally stay in Campbellville when he returns from the interior. At the scene of the crime, there was a cap that one of the assailants was wearing. The shell from the round that was fired remained on the road, until police visited the scene.
According to reports the bandits on the motorcycle traced the vehicle after the occupants made a business transaction. They decided to intercept the vehicle while it was stalling at the traffic light on Hunter Street, West Ruimveldt.
Eyewitness disclosed that the pillion rider on the CG hopped off the motorcycle while the traffic light was red, and approached the Toyota Allion. He opened the rear door and grabbed the haversack with the money.
According to the victim’s daughter, she received a cell phone call at 9:30 hrs from her father who told her that he was just shot in the leg and robbed.
Her father related to her what had transpired. She said, “The persons just came up at the side of the car, opened the door and said pass the bag, pass the bag. The bag with the money was on the floor of the car, so when they grab the bag, my father put out his left leg to run behind the man and he was shot…The driver took him to the hospital.”
