Dear Editor,
The propaganda machinery of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is nearing its climax. As the election climate heats up, so too is the distortion and misinformation division of the party’s communication network.
Latest victim is former PPP stalwart Moses Nagamootoo who has been described as a hypocrite, liar and opportunist – the typical response to those who have left the party to which their hearts belonged, including the late Ranji Chandisingh, and Vincent Teekah , not forgetting Halim Majeed, Malcolm Harripaul among others.
Today the propanda apparatus sprouts economic verbiage in defence of Bharrat Jagdeo’s pension entitlements.
“Comrades,” stop listening to yourselves. Guyanese people cannot be easily fooled today, thanks to a number of recent exposes by the struggling press on Government corruption, drugs and shady deals with foreign investors.
Indeed, some will certainly question the progress being touted by the governing party-
* house lots have been distributed for narrow financial and political gains.
* Georgetown and the East Coast skyline has been enhanced with beautiful buildings erected with questionable finances,
* Roads, bridges health and other social infrastructure have been built, even if poorly, using loans from multilateral financial institutions.
* Economic bullyism of struggling businesses by way of the VAT and other schemes have led financial accumulation businesses which keeps the country afloat.
Others may be carried away by President Jagdeo’s political rhetoric relating to global warming, growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and what has been described as Guyana ’s ability to withstand the effects of the global recession.
However, Economist Jagdeo should know (or perhaps not) that GDP is a very poor indicator of growth, especially in a country like Guyana where millions of dollars circulate in the underground economy and are not statistically reflected in Government computations.
On the ugly side, Guyana’s land resources continue to be plundered by local and foreign capitalists.
“Comrades” the traditional economic sectors- bauxite and sugar— have been for years in a tailspin. Gold and Timber resources continue to be in the hands of a few smart men.
Electricity generating facilities have been deteriorating for decades.
The result? Guyanese continue to hustle to make a living, whether by thieving, drug smuggling or working honestly for a fair wage. Guyanese continue to migrate in thousands. Crime and prostitution are escalating. Fear grips the land, especially at this time.
Guyanese deserve a better deal. It is time to have people of integrity to move the country forward.
