International Radio cricket commentator and former Guyana cricketer Sean Devers has resigned from
the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Cricket Development Committee. The Cricket Journalist, who is a Level 1 cricket coach and a qualified Cricket Umpire, withdrew from the Committee which is headed by GCB Vice-President and former Guyana batsman Alfred Mentore because of his job commitments.
In his resignation letter, which was copied to the GCB President and Secretary, Devers explained that his increasing workload as a Cricket Broadcaster and journalist, especially for International matches outside of Guyana forced him to quit the GCB position.
According to Devers he felt it was unfair to him, the GCB and Guyana’s cricket for him to continue and not function properly due to his other cricket-related activities. He told the GCB he fully supported its cricket development plans and hoped for a successful implementation of the many ideas of those on the CDC.
He also pledged his continued assistance to Guyana’s cricket development in whatever way he could be of help. “I am very sorry to hear of your position with regards to serving with us on the Development Committee. I understand the high demands of your job, the value of your time and that ability to multitask,” Mentore told Devers in an e-mail in response to his resignation.
“However, all is not lost and somehow we will find ways to use your resourcefulness and tap into your cricket brain and would be happy to have your insight as we work towards improving Guyana’s cricket,” Mentore added.
Devers, who also covers cricket for the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), the BBC World Service and the Regional Line & Length Radio Network, told the Media that while he considers himself a professional, not being a member of the GCB would give him more freedom to be critical of the GCB as Journalist if required, without a conflict of interest.
He said that with the resources available to the GCB he was confident that Guyana’s cricket can rise if all work together and thanked the GCB for involving him in the process.
