Every rope has an end! An Enmore, East Coast Demerara man who deliberately set fire to his parents’ house resulting in the death of his mother, had his extended freedom cut short when he was captured by police more than a year and a half on the run.
Deonarine Mohamed was captured by police on Sunday after they received a tip that he had returned to the village he had fled after the April 23, 2010 incident.
The man has reportedly confessed to investigators that he deliberately poured gasoline around the two storey wooden and concrete house at Enmore North and set it alight following a heated row with his father, Osman Mohamed.
Osman Mohamed and his wife, Gaitree Dhanraj, were both asleep when the fire started and suffered severe burns about their bodies as a result.
Dhanraj later succumbed to her injuries on May 1, last year.
Immediately after the fire, police received a tip that the suspect was heading to the city in a minibus.
The bus was subsequently intercepted and a suspect detained but when relatives turned up at the Vigilance Police Station where he was being held, they pointed out to police that they had arrested the wrong man.
Kaieteur News understands that the captured suspect has confessed to committing the act after a disagreement with his father over food.
A source close to the investigation said that the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions will be sought on the matter.
For sure, Mohamed will be charged with arson, while other charges including murder are being contemplated.
