Frustrated residents of Albouystown were given some relief after the Mayor and
City Council (M&CC) yesterday began cleaning the clogged canal that has been virtually useless and caused flooding in the vicinity of Albouys Street.
Residents of the area said that the waterway has been clogged for as long as most of them could remember and always overflowed when the tides are high.
The current spring tide has now made the situation unbearable.
Plastic bottles, food boxes, condoms and just about every other household article were seen floating in the yards, homes and businesses of some residents last Thursday evening.
Zalina Singh, along with many other parents in the area was fearful that the stagnant and sometimes overflowing piles of garbage would have caused the children in the community to fall sick.
Using an excavator the council was able to remove a large volume of plastic from the canal.
However, the worry for these residents remains that the canal is still clogged, and needs to be unclogged before the workers would have started cleaning.
Kaieteur News was told that the workers have already requested that the council provide them with two extra workers to assist in unclogging the said canal, but the request was not granted.
“We tell them and them send one man, and he can’t do anything by he self” said the excavator operator.
