Dear Editor,
Rajendra Bisessar said this “In some instances, some members of the PPP government would have to be tried and put in jail” in a letter titled ‘It’s blatant lies! I was never expelled’ (KN, Nov. 5, 2011). This is a momentous statement, an incredible statement, because it marks a stark difference between the PPP and the AFC.
When the PPP came to power in 1992, it did nothing to prosecute those in the PNC they had condemned for 28 years of plundering, corrupting, stealing and raping this country. Yes, the PPP did absolutely nothing after telling us for 28 years who they would jail, who would face the long arm of the law and who would be brought to justice under a PPP government.
Basically, the PPP lied to us. Which is why when I saw this statement from one of the AFC’s top guns, I almost fell off my chair. For the AFC is saying that it will prosecute and where convicted, jail those within the PPP government who stole from the Guyanese people and plundered and corrupted.
Bisessar’s statement is also profound for most Guyanese voters who see this election process as a masquerade, where one scamp takes off the mask and another scamp puts it on. If voters know that a party will take real action such as bringing those in government who engage in crimes to prosecution, they may be inclined to view the masquerade and their electoral choices differently. But where does it end?
If the AFC wins power and goes on this mission of bringing the crooks to justice, does it extend to those crooks from the PNC days, too, where evidence exists against them? I know that some PNC members and former members sitting in powerful positions in the public service will also perish with this AFC initiative.
The AFC is seen by some voters as too soft. This agenda to try and jail bandits in government surely changes that view. Frankly, I think prosecution of the highwaymen in various seats of government is an absolute necessity for a country like Guyana. Corruption and wrongdoing is a cancer in this country. It has destroyed this country, ripped and decayed its moral core and fibre.
Thieving of all forms became a way of life in Guyana under the PNC and the PPP. A new government that can bring crooks to justice and jail people will send shockwaves through this nation. It will force this nation to seriously reassess its moral centre and bring welcome relief to the youths of this country who desperately demand a new lease on life.
Going hard after the corrupt in the halls of power also signals to any members of a new government that they can be brought under the same sword too. It promotes accountability and requisite fear in future governments. The only thing I have to say to the AFC is that if you say you will try and jail crooks filling their pockets and you pull a PPP by doing nothing if elected, you will become a serious political liability. The PPP did exactly that and look at it now.
