Three days after he celebrated his 24th birthday, on November 3, last, David Allicock, a miner died in the North West District, on Sunday November 6, subsequently after a huge branch fell from the tree he was standing under.
Allicock died on his way to the Parker Cottage Hospital, in North West District, on Sunday evening.
Donela Francis, Allicock’s sister, related that her family learnt of her brother’s death after they received a phone call from her aunt, Ann.
The emotionally shaken young lady said that Ann proceeded to ask whether she had any knowledge about her brother’s employer and she said she responded in the negative.
Donela added she was then asked if she heard her brother had died and she responded again in the negative, before being informed of the tragic news.
Donela said the family was told that David was working in a pit, alongside a dredge owned by his brother-in-law, Martin. He came out of the pit after it began to rain heavily. The rains were accompanied by heavy winds causing David to seek refuge under a huge tree. A huge branch from the tree fell and struck him in his head.
David Allicock was rushed at the Parker Cottage Hospital, some two hours drive from where his work site is located.
He died before receiving medical attention.
Donela said that her family was also told that David sustained a huge cut to the left side of his head. He was able to utter words, whilst being transported to the hospital, his sister said.
The young miner had only gone to work in the North West District a month ago.
Arrangements are currently underway for the post mortem.
