Action in the 7:15 Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport football tournament will kick off today at several venues on the East Coast of Demerara.
The tournament, which is the annual Inter Block competition and sponsored by the Government of Guyana, has been modified to see teams playing for 15 minutes per half and fielding seven players per side, hence the 7:15 tagline.
A brainchild of Parliamentary Secretary, Steve Ninvalle, which started four years ago and has been played all over the country, the teams this year will again be drawn from the East Coast and East Bank Demerara, West Coast Berbice, West Coast Demerara, Georgetown and Linden.
Teams in Victoria, Buxton, Beterverwagting, Plaisance and Ann’s Grove will play today.
PS Ninvalle and Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony will be at Ann’s Grove to do the official kick off at that venue.
In the scheduled matches today, at Buxton – Buxton Back led by Backo Lewis face Company Front skippered by Travis Phyll.
At Ann’s Grove, Punters with Dwayne Rogers at the helm, tangle with Water Side led by Antonio Jackson, Ann’s Grove collide with Two Friends with Travis Alleyne and Kevon Barry respectively leading the two sides.
At the Betterverwagting Ground, Side Line battle Triumph with Kelsie Price and Colin Jones leading the former team, while Linden Dennis and Mark Glasgow spearheads Triumph. Back Dam with Delroy Dean leading their challenge, tangle with Central who will be led by Shawn Daniels and Eon Dooker.
And Goedverwagting will go head to head with 40 Block also at BV in a meeting of two Plaisance teams.
At Victoria, Backdam Super Eagles with skipper Brian Johnson in charge will take on Alley Warriors led by Andrew Williams, while Mid Section Lions oppose Road Front Elephants. Samuel Blackette and Aubrey Gibson will lead the respective sides.
The winner in each area will receive $50,000 complements of the Government of Guyana and will go through to the final round where $150,000 will be prize for the overall champion.
The government will provide balls for each area and assistance will be given for preparation of grounds. The final is scheduled for the GFC on November 26.
