Says Brands Coordinator, Nigel Worrel
By Edison Jefford
Brands Coordinator at Ansa Mcal Limited, Nigel Worrel believes that the Super 16 round of the Mackeson Smooth Moves 3-on-3 Basketball Championships will intensify the rivalry among the teams from across Guyana in one place for the first time in history.
Worrel was speaking to Kaieteur Sport yesterday, and asserted the fact that the Mackeson 3-on-3 tournament has broken new grounds with its whopping $1m first place prize and will continue to do so when it host teams from across Guyana tomorrow in Linden.
“It is the first time in the sport that we have teams converging from Bartica, West Demerara, the East Coast, Georgetown, Linden and New Amsterdam in Linden,” Worrel said, adding that he is of the view that the massive crowds will continue to turn out in the sport-savvy community.
Large crowds have already been drawn to the tournament that had preliminary games as far as in Bartica and New Amsterdam. There is absolutely no doubt that this round will set the Mining Town alight with pulsating Showtime ‘street-ball’, engaging its fans in a way that they had never before witnessed.
“We’re doing some specials for the fans. That’s all I will say, they have to come and see what we have in store for them. We want them to believe that they’re a part of this competition like we’ve been doing across Guyana where we have had games,” Worrel said.
Linden has serious sport enthusiasts and as such, they will certainly have huge expectations from the teams representing them at this stage. An entire community will be depending on Unknowns, Jets and Victory Valley Royals to keep the Mining Town in the tournament.
According to the Ansa Mcal Brands Coordinator, the tournament has already satisfied its origins and the expectations of the company. He observed that the real ‘ball’ toward the whopping award up for the team that finishes first starts tomorrow night among the best teams in the country.
Equal to the money up for grabs, the year’s bragging rights is priceless. The talk in the streets begun since the announcement of the tournament last month and built itself up to an engulfing wave of chatter about who is the best street-ball team in Guyana.
Tomorrow night is one of the answers to that question when eight teams exit the competition with the commencement of the knockout rounds. It’s do-or-die at the Sports Club Court with each team having just one chance to step closer to the enormous grand prize.
