A Grove, East Bank Demerara family yesterday averted disaster after some young men who reside in the area saw smoke coming out from the lower flat of a building that housed 11 persons and raised an alarm.
The two-storeyed house which is located at Lot 150 Second Street, Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, accommodated an extended family, comprising of the McIntoshes and the Francois, with four persons residing in the upper flat and the remaining seven persons occupying the bottom flat of the building.
This newspaper was made to understand that the fire which started in an apartment at the back of the house in the bottom flat damaged just a few items including clothing and food items belonging to an elderly Patrick Francois, known as ‘Uncle Patrick’ who lived in the apartment alone.
As of last evening firemen were still trying to ascertain the cause of the fire, while the family members were trying to determine the extent of the losses Uncle Patrick has incurred.
Kaieteur News was told that a young man who also resides in the house was on his way home when he noticed smoke coming from the back of the house. Rushing to see the source of the smoke, the young man raised an alarm and his cousins and neighbours came to his rescue and in a joint effort the young men were able to extinguish the fire and prevent the house from burning into ashes.
A resident of Second Street, Grove told this newspaper that the Fire Service was prompt in receiving their call and for that they remain thankful.
Patrick Francois, the elderly uncle in whose apartment the fire started, told Kaieteur News that he has no idea what could have started the fire.
Meanwhile, in a fit of range the man started to point fingers at persons who he believes might have had hands in lighting his home afire. However investigations are currently ongoing to determine otherwise.
