Consistent Guyanese distance runner, Cleveland Forde, continued to prove that he is the current man to beat
among Caribbean athletes when he finished third, behind two Kenyans, at the much-anticipated annual University of the West Indies (UWI) Half Marathon.
Kenya’s George Towett outdid his countryman and defending champion, Simon Sawe, winning in 1:06.41; Sawe had 1:08.03 for second while Forde was right up there with 1:08.55 in a race he described as one of his best in an already extensive career.
The UWI Sports and Physical Education Centre (SPEC) has increased the level of competition in the race on an annual basis. Towett carted off the US$2,000 first prize money, while Leah Kirjen, another Kenyan, took the female version of the international race.
The race started at the UWI SPEC facility in St. Augustine to La Resource Junction in D’Abadie and back. Trinidad’s Richard Jones placed fifth in 1:09.00, while Guyana’s Kelvin Johnson came in seventh overall with a time of 1:12.22 in steaming hot conditions.
Forde briefly indicated that the race is part of his preparations for the upcoming South American 10km Road Race that will be staged in Guyana in another three weeks. Forde believes that he has the condition and determination to turn in a memorable performance. (Edison Jefford)
