At two minutes after midnight on October 31, 2011, the world`s seven billionth baby, a boy, was born in Russia’s most western city of Kaliningrad, as the UN announces the seventh billionth resident of planet Earth.
The latest UN predictions say the global population will climb to nine billion by 2050 and level out afterwards.
Yesterday, Ban Ki-Moon planned to hold a news conference to mark the seventh billionth birth – out of 382,000 which are estimated to happen during the day. He also planned to speak on challenges ahead, including poverty and sustainable development, his office said.
The new babies raising the number enter a “world of contradiction,” with luxury and extreme poverty, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.
“I suspect that the 7 billionth citizen, a child, will be born into a world of contradiction – plenty of food, but still a billion people going to bed hungry every night. Many people enjoy luxurious lifestyles, but still many people are impoverished.” The UN secretary General said.
He said that the milestone was “clearly a clarion call to action,” for everyone – not just for the United Nations and national governments, but also for “local communities, civil community leaders, non-governmental organizations, faith leaders – we have to have a combined solidarity to address this issue.”
When the UN presents its population report, the parents of the seventh billionth child will receive a certificate to prove their contribution to the history of humankind.
