Having conquered all at the local, Caribbean, Regional and International levels, Randolph ‘The Accomplisher’ Morgan continues to prove that he is the best in the business on the local scene.
A member of ‘Body Max Gym’ Morgan romped to another Overall Title when the curtains came down on the 2011 edition of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) Senior Championships which took place at the Saint Stanislaus College Auditorium yesterday.
Morgan, competing in the 83kgs Weight Class not only over powered four other rivals but became the third Guyanese to deadlift more than 700 pounds; achieving 320kgs (705lbs) with his second attempt yesterday.
What makes Morgan’s achievement more special is the fact that of the two other athletes who accomplished the feat (Mark ‘Uno’ Perry and Horace Steele) he is the lightest of them at 179lbs; he won his category which attracted the most competitors (5) with an overall total of 822.5kgs (Squat 295; Bench press 207.5; Deadlift 320) with his Wilkes Points totaling 553.87.
Upper Demerara Barbell Club’s Colin Mr. Clean’ Chesney who became the first Guyanese to Squat 800 lbs equaled that accomplishment again yesterday. The Linden strongman again achieved 365kgs (804lbs) and won his category 120kgs with an overall total of 842kgs (Squat 365; Bench press 200; Deadlift 277.5), Wilkes Points 487.55.
Other category winners yesterday were Vijay Rahim (59kg-Hardcore Gym) with a total of 497.5kgs (Squat 185; Bench press 95; Deadlift 217.5), Wilkes Points 439.29.
Veteran and athlete extraordinaire Winston Stoby of Kingsrow Barbell Club topped the 74kg division in the three-way contest. Stoby totaled 682.5kgs (Squat 262.5; Bench press 142.5; Deadlift 277.5), Wilkes Points 491.4.
Errol ‘Big Man’ Henry (93kg Class) was all one like Rahim and Chesney in his division. Henry, a member of Kingsrow Barbell Club and the father of National Rugby Player/Coach Theodore Henry totaled 637.5 points (Squat 250; bench press 137.5; Deadlift 250), Wilkes Points 408.13.
Karel Mars of Buddy’s Gym (105kg) won this category in a head to head battle with Gym mate Mervin Richards. Mars tallied 792.5 (Squat 310; Bench press 190; Deadlift 292.5), Wilkes Points 483.90.
Kimberly Mars-Loncke (Kingsrow Barbell Club) made a welcome return to the sport but had to settle for the runner-up position in the 84+ Class behind Guyana’s most accomplished female athlete Dawn Barker of the Upper Demerara Barbell Club.
Barker tallied 497.5 (Squat 205; Bench press 110; Deadlift 182.5), Wilkes Points 403.87, while Mars-Loncke had an overall total of 350 and Wilkes Points 310.48 (Squat 132.5; Bench press 70; Deadlift 147.5). Stoby ended as the runner-up to Morgan overall with Chesney 3rd and Mars 4th.
Trophies for yesterday’s championship were donated by Fitness Express, International Pharmaceutical Agency and The Trophy Stall, Bourda Market. Present at yesterday’s activity was Guyana’s Most accomplished Bodybuilder who was also a Powerlifter, Hugh Ross who also took time out to offer brief remarks to the gathering.
GAPF President Peter Green thanked his Executive, athletes, sponsors and spectators for their support in making the 2011 seniors the success it was. He noted that the Federation will be meeting shortly to name athletes for the various championships at the Caribbean, Regional and International levels.
