Contestants of the July 9, Miss Guyana Universe Pageant 2011, last evening received their prizes. The ceremony held at the Water Chris Hotel, Waterloo Street, Georgetown, was not without contention.
According to the franchise holder Odinga Lumumba, it is customary to host the prize giving ceremony months after the pageant to allow ‘feelings to settle’ and to evaluate the queen’s behaviour.
Recipients of monetary prizes were the reigning queen, Kara Lord and the first, second and third runners-up, Seromanie Choonamlall, Judith Sullivan, and Ayana Harris respectively. The fourth runner-up Roshini Boodhoo, who is the reigning Miss Guyana India, did not attend.
Lord who looked absolutely stunning last night expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Guyana. She related that her experience as Guyana’s ambassador to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the Miss Universe Pageant 2011 held on September 12 was fulfilling.
Though, Lord’s reign is not up, she emphasised that the experience is life changing and developmental.

Really? Oh sorry – I now remember – he also said that before 1992, “Guyana was the duncest country in the caribbean”. I guess it still remains so if he expects people to buy that stupid bluff.
What? He said before not afterwards… someone doesn’t know their timelines… eh eh.
We were dunce country because education was collapsing and not available to large number of guyanese. And those who did had access had to cope with the hardships of trying to live with the everyday challenges that the people of Guyana faced. Many children were taken out of school because their labour was needed to help sustain the family. They learnt life skills but not academic skills. Guyana was lacking academic persons.
