13-year old Toosieda Persaud sustained burns to both her legs while fleeing from a fire that had engulfed her home at Pigeon Island, East Coast Demerara, early yesterday morning.
The fire which is of unknown origin began around 04:30 hours and resulted in Persaud being hospitalized in the Burn Care Unit of Georgetown Hospital.
According to reports, Ramdass Lalchand and his wife along with two of their children ages 9 and 13, retired to bed around 20:00 hours on Saturday in their two flat concrete house.
Lalchand was awoken at approximately 04:30 hours by an unusual heat around him.
Kaieteur News was told that Lalchand jumped out of bed only to find the fire in the living room of his house.
He immediately went to his wife and children to get them safely out of the house but in the process of fleeing, his 13 year old daughter’s legs came into contact with the fire.
The fire service arrived 30 minutes later but by that time the house and its contents had already been critically damaged.
The family lost all possessions and is now taking shelter at the home of relatives.
The estimated value of damage is approximately $5M.
