A Leyland DAF truck, driven by 29-year-old Roy Narine of Diamond Housing Scheme,
East Bank Demerara (EBD), yesterday swerved off the Friendship Public Road, into a trench to avoid a collision between a minibus and another truck.
According to an eyewitness, Narine was heading south (towards Timehri) when a truck tried to overtake him near the bend in the road. The trucks were side-by-side when a minibus heading north (to Georgetown) appeared.
To avoid the collision, Narine swerved off the road onto its shoulder, and being unable to stop it skidded off the road, knocking down a road sign, and damaging a pipeline before plunging into the trench.
The eyewitness stated that neither vehicle stopped to assist Narine and his passenger, Chitanand Ramsaroop, 18, also of Diamond Housing Scheme. Narine was pinned down for several minutes and received assistance from passersby.
Both men were rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, Diamond. They were not seriously injured. Narine sustained a cut to his right palm and a laceration on his right cheek, while Ramsaroop’s right knee was slightly damaged.
The men were at the time transporting about 200 bags of flour to Lethem. The truck is owned by Mohammed F. Sheik of Tabatinga Creek, Lethem.
The police are investigating the accident.
