After 5-wicket win against T&T in Final
With four consecutive Regional four day titles but none at the One-Day level
since 2007, Jamaica beat Trinidad and Tobago by five wickets at the Providence Stadium last night under lights to capture the Regional Super50 cricket title and the Clive Lloyd trophy.
In a low-scoring match on a sluggish track which again offered plenty of assistance to the spinners, the batsmen on both sides toiled hard for their runs as Jamaica reached 123-5 off 35.5 overs replying to T&T’s 118 all out in 46.1 overs.
Man-of-the-Series Jason Mohamed top-scored with 32 for T&T, the defending regional t20 champions after they had elected to bat first but the right-hander who finished with nine more runs than Chris Gayle’s 218, failed to get any support as only Sherwin Ganga (19), Sunil Narine (16) and Samuel Badree (10) of the other batsmen reached double figures.
A fair size crowd watched as Andre Russell (7-0-10-2) and Man-of-the-Match left-arm spinner Nikita Miller (12-2-19-2) reduced T&T to 30-4 as the first four batsmen all failed to reach double figures.
Sherwin Ganga and Jason Mohamed added 49 for the fifth wicket before Gayle (10-4-31-2) removed Ganga at 74-5 and Narine at 92-6 to leave T&T with the most title at this level (10) in deep trouble.
Leg-spinner Odean Browne (11.1-2-34-2) sent back the consistent Mohamed to a sharp catch at extra cover by Gayle at 98-7 and T&T, playing in their third consecutive final in Guyana, never recovered.
In a rain affected tournament marred by slow, low pitches and ordinary batting, Gayle’s pugnacious 147 at Everest against CCC was the only century and his work at the top of the order is often almost exclusively relied on for his team’s success.
The 23-year-old Narine began the final with 14 scalps and a record two five-wicket hauls and the battle between the off-spinner and the former West Indies Captain was highly anticipated.
T&T began with two spinners and Narine had Kennar Lewis for a duck and Sherwin Ganga removed Xavier Marshall (5) and at 14-2 Jamaica were off to a bad start in conditions which favoured T&T style of cricket.
When Gayle, who began watchfully, was struck plumb in front to leg-spinner Badree for 12 from 40 balls at 31-3, T&T were back in the fray.
With the spinners proving difficult to get away, Browne (6) was sent in to ‘up the tempo’ but soon lofted Dave Mohamed to long-on at
42-4 before Danza Hyatt (29) was trapped leg before to Ryad Emrit at 77-5.
However, level-headed former Captain Tamar Lambert (30*) and Shawn Findlay (25*) saw their team to victory to give Jamaica their sixth title and the US$10,000 winner’s cheque.
T&T had to settle for the US$4,000 runner-up prize while Jason Mohamed collected US$750 and Miller US$250 for their efforts.
Mohamed, who scored two important fifties, received the Richie Richardson Trophy for being adjudged the competition’s best batsman, while Narine received the Curtly Ambrose ‘Best bowler’ trophy and Guyana’s Derwin Christian the Jeff Dujon ‘Best ‘Keeper’ trophy. Gayle took home the Collis King ‘Best all-rounder’ trophy.
Jagdeo giving Exxon 102 cent to collect 2 cent.
