Lopes/Lewis beat Fenty/Murray, progress to semis
Veteran player and Coach Shelly Ramdyhan teamed up with her daughter Nicola to overcome the team of top juniors Aruna Ramrattan/Shawna Gentle to capture the Trophy Stall sponsored Tennis tournament doubles title.
In the first set Shelly’s aggressive net play made the difference as she easily carried her team to a 6-1 first set win along with consistent play from Nicola. In the second set Ramrattan/Gentle stepped up a gear and took a 3-1 lead which was short lived as the Ramdyhan’s came back to lead 5-4. Nicola Ramdyhan then saved three break points on her serve after being down 0-40 whilst serving for the match. The match ended 6-1 6-4.
In the Men’s doubles, top juniors Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis came back from a set down to emerge victors over Nicholas Fenty and Ronald Murray in an entertaining match.
Murray’s south paw serve was an effective weapon as he set up easy volleys for Fenty to put away against their younger opponents as they took the first set 6-3. Lopes and Lewis then fought back valiantly to level the match by taking the second set 6-4 to force a deciding super tie-break.
Their momentum was carried into the super tie-break as they always had the lead, Fenty and Murray’s cautious play in the deciding set allowed their opponents to be one step ahead in their 10-7 win.
Lopes/Lewis will play the winner of the match between the Jugdeo brothers Kris & Joe and the top seeds Leyland Leacock/Gilbert Barckoy as the tournament continues this weekend.
In other matches played on Sunday last, the Mixed doubles team of Leyland Leacock/Aruna Ramrattan had to battle hard to overcome Gavin Lewis and Shawna Gentle 6-4 6-4 to progress to the semi finals where they will face Benedict Sukra/Nicola Ramdyhan.
