The Guyana Police Force came in for high praise yesterday as they apprehended four teens who were allegedly caught red-handed burglarising a residence.
Acting on a telephone tip-off by a resident, police ranks swooped down at Lot 138 E Farmer’s Field, South Sophia at around 10:45hrs and accosted the unarmed teens. The entire episode lasted for about two hours as residents kept a watchful eye on the house belonging to Edward Williams.
Williams who was at work during the incident, learnt of the break-in only after the teens were taken to the police station. He expressed gratitude to the police for apprehending the thieves and to his neighbours for their vigilance.
When this publication arrived on the scene the police were inside the house with the teens. According to an officer they were dusting for fingerprints to establish if the intruders had touched any items.
It was revealed that the teens had already packed their loot, comprising desktop computer, printer, games and other electrical items, in a bag.
While the lawmen and suspects were inside the house, a group of irate residents got into an altercation with close relatives of one of the teens, suspected to be the mastermind, since he belongs to the community.
The residents alleged that the nabbed suspects were involved in a series of robberies in the community and neighbouring Plump Park. In attempting to justify their suspicions, they related that the burglars only break-in and rob houses that are unoccupied during the day, and it is only someone or persons from the neighbourhood that would have such detailed and precise information.
The men and the loot they had packed up to cart off were taken from the house to the Prashad Nagar Police Station.
At the station, a Plump Park businessman, Hugh Cummings, reportedly identified the men as having broken into his entity, Cummings Contracting and Construction Services, several weeks ago.
Cummings noted that he has been staking out for the teens since they tried robbing his premises on different occasions. He related that on Saturday, last, the teens tried to gain entry into his business place, but fled after he approached them with a cutlass. They made their getaway on foot.
