There was a near disaster yesterday when a truck which was transporting rice
from the Essequibo Coast slipped and stuck between the MV Makouria and the Parika Ferry Stelling.
According to reports, the platform used to get vehicles on and off the ferry broke on one side almost sending the truck into the Essequibo River. However, since most of the vehicle was already onto the stelling, only the right rear wheels were left hanging over the water. They were supported by broken wooden planks. Planks are used to offload vehicles and passengers from the boat.
The truck owner, who is also a rice farmer from Affiance on the Essequibo Coast, Debindeen Dyal, said his vehicle which was laden with sacks of rice was being driven off the ferry when the planks broke. The man said the back of the truck slipped through the space between the stelling and the boat, but luckily the truck did not roll back into the river.
He however noted that the incident caused some serious damage to his vehicle, and he suffered other expenses. According to Dyal, the truck chassis was completely destroyed as well as other parts of his truck. The incident also forced several other trucks which were on board the ferry to be stalled up for several hours, while an alternative ramp had to be set up for passengers to get off as well. Fortunately no one was injured in the incident.
Dyal told this publication that they contacted the Transport and Harbours Department and were promised help to get the truck removed. However, as the man and his workers waited for hours they were told on several occasions that the managers were all engaged in a meeting.
When this publication contacted the Transport and Harbours Departments, a female indicated that this was indeed the case.
Later in the afternoon Dyal contacted Kaieteur News to say that the truck was eventually moved from the spot by public spirited citizens and without any help from the Transport and Harbours Department.
