$3.5 million up for grabs in Day/Night ‘final four’ at Providence
After the preliminary stage of the Regional Super50 cricket tournament here in Guyana, four teams are still in the race for Clive Lloyd Trophy, the G$2 million first prize and exposure to the ESPN Television audience in the ‘final four’ of the Regional Super50 cricket tournament which bowls off today at Providence with semi-final number one.
This is the first time that a West Indies 50-over tournament will be broadcast live on both Radio and International TV and both semi-finals and Saturday’s Final will be played under floodlights as Day/Night encounters beginning at 13:30hrs.
Guyana face T&T today and Jamaica face the Sagicor HPC tomorrow before the winners meet on Saturday.
Admission to the Stadium is just $1,000 and tickets are on sale at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) office and the venue and today’s first semi-final between host Guyana and regional powerhouse Trinidad and Tobago should attract a large crowd on a National Holiday in Guyana to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.
GCB President and WICB Director Ramsay Ali said yesterday at the launching of the ‘final four’ at the Princess Hotel that everything is in place for a grand conclusion to the tournament adding that all International standards and requirements will be in effect today, in the second semi tomorrow and on Saturday.
All of the Region’s leading commentators are already in Guyana and yesterday the Captains for the semi-finalists were all present at the Princess Hotel along with GCB Secretary and WICB Director Anand Sanasie and Peter Sleep who has been contracted by the WICB to coordinate the ESPN coverage.
Sleep said that ESPN was pleased with the success of their coverage of the Caribbean t20 competition and expressed confidence that future Regional competitions could be beamed live into the USA via the full ESPN network adding that HPC’s participation in the semis should also spark plenty of interest around the region.
All of the Captains expressed pleasure to be participating in the semi-finals and promised good cricket for the fans. (Sean Devers)
