Brusche’s Basketball Classic quarter-finals
Basketball rivalry has returned to Linden and tonight, four of the town’s best clubs will square off in the quarter-finals of the 2011 Brusche’s Basketball Classic at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Hard Court.
The Kashif and Shanghai Kings and the Victory Valley Royals, two teams with a bitter-sweet history in the sport, will get things on the way in the first game while the defending Champions, Wismar Pistons go up against the Amelia’s Ward Jets.
While Pistons and Kings received a ‘bye’ to the quarter-finals, Jets and Royals had a taste of competition with the Amelia’s Ward team defeating Kwakwani 60–48 and the side from the Victory Valley community, stopping the Retrieve Raiders 54–41.
Jets and Pistons also share a rich history of enmity for each other on the court and while the champions have their same team, their competition for tonight had modified their line-up in order to be more successful.
Quincy ‘Prog-Z’ Jones, Trevor Profitt, Mark Louis, Dwight Cooper and point guard Nevin Grenville are the prime players for the Pistons.
The Jets’ power-forward, Shane Webster has proven to be one of Linden’s best in the paint and he was justly rewarded with his selection to Guyana’s 2011 CBC senior team.
Point Guard Kevin ‘2-Feet’ Joseph is also in top form and the player known for his crossovers and unselfish ways has recruited guards Leonard Caleb and Ruel McKinnon to help him carry the Jets to championship.
Both players made their presence felt on the team as Caleb netted a game high 19 points in their opening game.
Meanwhile, Kings who have over the years been considered Linden’s top team will certainly have to prove that to be accurate against Royals.
With Chris Williams looking sharp from down-town, Orlando Glasgow cleaning the boards and Anson Durant making the right plays, it would be interesting to see how Marvin Hartman and Steve Neils Jr. manage.
Neils who was named Guyana’s senior national captain at the CBC games, did not ‘show-up’ as many expected him to and with that, he would be looking to redeem himself.
The lanky Jason Alonso and Omally Sampson will man the Kings’ front-court with Glasgow, Dwight Cooper and Alwyn Rodney being the opposition.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
