Dominican based Guyanese pugilist, Clive Atwell arrived in Guyana on Friday morning last and has promised Guyanese boxing buffs a special treat when he clashes with Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers in the ‘Thirst Park Explosion,’ slated for the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground on October 29 next.
Atwell appeared on the weekly Sports Show on Brutal Sounds Channel 2 on Sunday evening last and said that he has been engaged in serious work and was a mite disappointed that his original opponent, Ray Sandiford had opted out of the bout. He said that fans could expect a top performance from him since he has been training diligently.
Atwell has represented this country at several international games as an amateur and had won a bronze medal at the PanAm games in Brazil shortly before acquiring his professional license. His only blemish to an otherwise impeccable record is a drawn decision against Mark Austin in an earlier encounter on the Friday night cards.
He is currently honing his skills at the Five Star Boxing Gym, Golden Grove ECD.
His opponent, Rogers is operating out of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym in Berbice. We have been unable to ascertain his progress but Rogers have always turned in crowd pleasing affairs. Should he enter this bout with similar propensities the boxing buffs could look forward to an engaging match.
Otherwise, several other bouts would comprise the card including the long awaited bout between former European champion and current local middleweight champion, Howard Eastman and Edmond DeClou for the local accolade while Pauline London, who has brashly called out Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil to put her WIBA heavyweight title on the line, will get her wish after O’Neil called her bluff.
Mark Austin would be seeking redemption after his humiliating loss to Revlon Lake, when he squares off with Jermaine King in a welterweight six rounder while knockout artist, Simeon Hardy will also appear on the card in a four rounder against Barbadian Julian Taniff moments before Iwan Azore and Troy Lewis go after each other in an 8 rounds middleweight affair.
Meanwhile, the organizers have intimated that there will be no amateur bouts on this card while the admission price moves to $2,500 for the inner ringside while the outer ringside will be $1,500.
