Richard Bourne appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer two charges of theft. Bourne was apprehended by the police who claim that the man stole one wedding band belonging to Indira Jaiwalla and one motor cycle belonging to Odwin Amsterdam, a policeman.
Bourne, who is said to be a pork knocker with three children and resides at 35 Tuschen Housing Scheme, is accused of stealing the articles valued over $200,000. The charges state that on the day of the incident at around 09:45 hours Indira Jaiwalla was seated in a car in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market wearing her wedding ring which she valued at $25,000.
The defendant had allegedly approached the woman and pulled out a knife, ordering her to hand over her wedding band. The court was told that the man thereafter took off making good his escape. The court was further told that the woman later reported the matter.
Another charge read against Bourne stated that the virtual complainant, Odwin Amsterdam, had taken his motor cycle to a workshop where he had left it. Around 14:30 hours on the same day, Amsterdam returned to the shop to uplift his motorbike where he met the vehicle outside of the garage.
The off duty officer subsequently went inside of the shop to inquire about his bike being outside of the establishment. The court heard that by the time the officer returned outside to his surprise the bike had gone missing. The man inquired about the bike’s whereabouts but could not receive any answer. The rank further made a report about the stolen cycle. In an effort to recover the motor cycle, camera footage from the mechanic shop revealed the image of Bourne removing the cycle.
When the bike was recovered it was found with another man, 27-year-old Randolph Emmanuel of Kaikan Settlement. Emmanuel had been implicated in the matter since he was in possession of the stolen article. The two men pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft levied against them.
Bail was refused and the duo will be returning to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer the charges.
