Plywood manufacturer, Barama Company Limited, has signed a $4.6M agreement with the Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI) that will see 30 students benefitting from sponsorship and an apprenticeship programme.
The signing which took place on October 6 at ETI will include students’ performance being monitored closely over the next four years by the institute and Barama.
According to a release from Barama, it has not ruled out the possibility of further opportunities of engagement with ETI.
“We are encouraged by the number of programmes being offered by the Government of Guyana to address the skilled labour force needs of enterprises and industries.”
“The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) represents another example of private/public partnership which has received the endorsement of the government and regional authorities.”
Among those present at the signing were Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh; Region Two Chairman, Ali Baksh, other regional representatives, members of the ETI Board, teachers, students, and special invitees.
According to Barama, its contribution over the years also included support for Kuru Kururu College, Guyana Technical Institute, Guyana Industrial Training Centre and the University of Guyana.
“It has been our observation that students are always eager for these opportunities to gain the necessary experience combined with the knowledge they have acquired during their studies.”
Eleven ETI graduates were honoured at the MoU signing ceremony for having successfully completed a six- week work-study attachment at Barama’s Essequibo operations.
Ten of the students subsequently joined Barama permanently, the company said.
