A 40-year-old miner was killed on Friday after the truck he was driving plunged into a ravine in the Mahdia backdam.
Relatives said that Mark Anthony Hamid of Craig, East Bank Demerara and Diamond Housing Scheme, was trapped for several hours in the cab and passed away on the way to the Mahdia Hospital when rescuers finally cut him free.
According to reports, Hamid and about two others were heading out of the backdam to pick up another worker, when the truck he was driving veered off the road while going downhill.
Kaieteur News understands that the passengers in the tray managed to jump free before the vehicle slammed into a tree then toppled into a ravine.
However, Hamid and another occupant were trapped in the cab.
Relatives were told that Hamid was still conscious, but one of his legs was crushed in the wreckage and it took rescuers some four hours to cut him loose.
They then attempted to rush him to the Mahdia Hospital, but the miner died on the way. Hamid is survived by his wife and three children.
Relatives said that police were expected to bring the body to the city last night.
An official from Mahdia told Kaieteur News that there have been several accidents and some four deaths for the month in the same mountainous area.
