Residents of Soesdyke, parents of children attending St. Mary’s Primary School,
Soesdyke, members of the Parent Teacher Association body and students of the school last evening held a candlelight vigil for the three children who were reportedly murdered by their father, John Blanchard.
The vigil was organized by the school’s PTA body since two of the dead children, Belika and her sister, Joy Blanchard, attended the school.
As hymns were being sung the group all holding candles, left the compound of the St. Mary’s Primary school and headed toward the home where the children spent their last moments. The children’s maternal grandparents led the vigil which made its way along the Soesdyke Public Road then left into Dr. Charles Road.
As the crowd made its way to the children’s home it kept growing as more people eagerly joined in, singing the hymns. After a 15-minute walk, the crowd made its way into the yard where the children and their parents lived.
For some of the teachers and even some residents it was a very emotional moment as they entered the yard which was in total darkness. Some persons were heard saying that they were getting goose bumps upon entering the yard.
However the crowd was prevented from getting close to the house as there was still police crime scene tape around the yard.
In the yard the children’s mother, Onika Blanchard, and her uncle stood as prayers were said and songs were sung. The gathering also held a minute of silence for the children after which a relative thanked the community as well as
the school for their support through this rough time. Mrs. Blanchard also opted to say a word of prayer for her children asking the Almighty that they be granted eternal rest. Her prayers were followed by her tears. She too thanked everyone for sharing this time with her.
As the uncle prayed many children could not contain their tears. Before leaving the home several candles were placed in the yard as the crowd headed back to the Primary School where a wake was held.
On Tuesday last Joy, Belika and their four year-old brother Daniel were reportedly killed by their father at their Soesdyke home. Belika and her brother Daniel were pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre while Joy who was being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit succumbed to her injuries early yesterday morning.
