Hemraj hits 81, Trevor Benn denied helmet-trick

The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Carib Beer, Heroes Cup two-day first division cricket competition continued yesterday with second round matches at the Police ground Eve Leary and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground.
At Eve Leary, National under-19 left-hander Chanderpaul Hemraj stroked a fluent 81 for Everest before a hat-trick from Police pacer Trevor Benn wrapped up the innings since last man Christopher Surat left the venue before batting, forcing his team to declare with nine wickets down.

Police were 43 without loss with Troy Benn unbeaten on 25 and Ryan Rajmangal not out on 18 replying to Everest’s 181-9 declared.
After Chris Patandin (1) was caught behind off pacer Keiko Gurrick at 10-1, before Gurrick, who finished with 3-24 from eight overs, got rid of Joseph Perry (5) and Vijay Narine (0) via the leg before route, Everest slipped to 41-3 on a slow track in overcast conditions.
Mohan Ramdeen (12) and the elegant Hemraj carried the score to 79 before Ramdeen was caught behind off Trevor Benn for three at 74-4 and when Dayanand Roopnarine (3) was caught and bowled by leg-spinner Vishal Jaigobin five runs later, Everest were still in a good position with Hemraj looking confident.
However, Benn, ignored by the Essequibo selectors, had Hemraj caught behind by his brother Troy and then trapped Javeed Rasheed and Phillip Persaud leg before for ducks off the next two balls to claim a hat-trick before being denied the chance of taking four wickets off four balls because Surat left his team as the last three wickets tumbled at 181 with Benn finishing with 4-46 from 16.3 overs.
At GDF, GCC were 0-0 off one ball when bad light stopped play after the soldiers were dismissed for 203. National First-Class Opener Shemroy Barrington (89) was again in good form before once again being dismissed when well set for a century, while Paul Castello (40) and National under-19 player Kevin Boodie (38) also failed to build on good starts for GDF.
Eighteen-year-old left-arm spinner Raj Nanan followed up his five-wicket haul in the last round with 4-36 and got support from slow bowler Winston Forrester who had 3-15. Both matches conclude today. (Sean Devers)
