Oct 14, 2011 Letters
Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me to comment on Dr. Hinds’ 6 October 2011 letter in Kaieteur News. His GNU is the latest manifestation of the political equivalent of “heads I win, tail you lose.”
In a country rife with racial insecurities, one would assume that Dr. Hinds would be circumspect in his choice of abbreviation for his power-sharing scheme. Is he aware that the gnu is an African wildebeest? Or is his subconscious is betraying him? Dr. Hinds is on record that he believes that his “birthright” confers upon him and his coterie the power to dictate “who gets what, when and how.”
For Dr. Hinds, Guyana is a society in which the demography and economy will never change-the racial composition of the population is fixed, the voting pattern at the polls is static, the state will always be the “largest employer” and the private sector will remain “relatively small”.
According to him, all Guyana needs are “institutional assurances.” What are these institutional assurances? Since Dr. Hinds is preoccupied with the state as the “largest employer”; it is only logical that he seeks for his constituency more “government jobs.”
Accordingly, instead of merits, a race-based quota system will determine who gets hired for Government jobs. In effect, instead of eliminating racial insecurity Dr. Hinds proposes to enshrine it.
But most disturbing is Dr. Hinds’s conclusion that his power sharing scheme will “brings the opposition off the streets into the formal councils of government”. What Dr. Hinds is proposing is nothing more than mob rule: If in fair election, his constituency wins-they win; if they lose, his constituency must be rewarded for not disturbing the peace. For Dr. Hinds it’s “head I win, tail you lose.”
Sincerely,
Roger Ally
