Arivindo Krishnalall, a member of the National Commission on Law and Order, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court yesterday to answer to a charge of fraudulent misappropriation. The 36-year-old pleaded not guilty.
Krishnalall, who resides at 29 Angus Avenue, Rupununi, was accused of taking money entrusted to him and converting it to his own use.
The court heard that between August 1 and 2, a wildlife exporter, Naresh Tika, gave the accused US$ 1,700 which he was supposed to convert to Guyana currency and return to him. It was alleged that Krishnalall converted the sum of money to his own purpose.
The court was told that when Tika requested the money from Krishnalall, he was given a cheque. Tika went to uplift the money from the bank, but was told that that sum of money was not in the account. The wildlife exporter then alerted the police and the defendant was subsequently apprehended and charged.
Krishnalall was represented by attorney at law Harris Lawrence, who told the court that his client had no previous offences.
The accused was placed on $200,000 bail and the matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for December 6.
