Dear Editor,
The long anxiously expected date for the general elections to be held in Guyana has been finally announced by the outgoing President, Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo. And I am making a suggestion to the president to declare this day a public holiday for more than one reason.
Firstly, many persons in the past were unable to vote because their rights were infringed by employers refusing to grant them the time off. I am speaking from an observer point of view.
Secondly: some went to the polls in the wee hours of the morning and there were some delays in finding persons names and addresses and that caused some amount of delay in voting. There were delays in their getting to work on time.
Thirdly: by the time many persons get off from work, the polling stations are closed or about to be close and this brings some amount of tension and confusion. So as to have a voting free day come November the 28, 2011, Mr. Jagdeo should consider this day a public holiday.
