Batters of the Cougars football club in New Amsterdam battered their opponents into submission to win the New Amsterdam Prisons 5-a-side knockout football competition which was played recently under lights at the All Saints Scott Church ground Princess Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam.
The competition, which was played in observance of Prison Week, saw 11 teams taking part namely Liverpool, Basin Warriors, Prisons A and B, Gaza, Batters, Manchester United, Banks All Stars, Sharp Shooters, Rookies and Wonders.
In the final Batters kept their composure and turned on the heat when necessary to beat Wonders of the Hearts of Oak Football club 2-0 with Kelvin Joseph netting the double.
In Earlier play – Prisons B got the better of Manchester United 1-0 through a defence error. Batters won from Rookies 1-0 with Kelvin Joseph scoring. Gaza then swamped Prison ‘A’ 4-0. Wonders defeated Liverpool by a Stephan DeFlorimonte strike. Basin Warriors then shot out Sharp Shooters 1-0 with Winston Benjamin being the marksman.
In Quarterfinal results, Basin Warriors won their duel from Gaza 1-0 through a Horace Roach Goal. Prisons B then won their game against Banks All Stars. Stephan DeFlorimonte scored for Wonders as they defeated Gaza 1-0.
Batters then battered Banks All Stars 3-0 with the prolific Kelvin Joseph hitting home two and Jamal Joseph one. Basin Warriors had the better of their encounter with Wonders, winning 1-0 and Batters then defeat Prison B 1-0 through a Franklin Mercurius goal.
In the semifinal – the first encounter which went all the way down to the wire, Batters defeated Basin Warrior in their intriguing encounter on sudden death penalty kicks after the game ended 0-0 after full and extra time. In the next game, which was also closely contested, Wonders stayed on course to edge past host Prisons B by a 1-0 margin with Andrew Bess being the man on target.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, Batters which is made up of players from Cougars Football Club was presented with the winning trophy. Wonders comprising of players of the Hearts of Oak Masters team received the second place trophy. Prisons B collected the third place trophy.
The Prolific Kelvin Joseph of the winning Batters team won a prize for scoring the most goals during the competition. He netted five, while Carlos Payne of Prisons B received his prize for scoring the best goal during the competition.
