The Committee for Human Rights and for free and fair elections continued the vigil last night, outside State House. The exercise was part of the promised nightly vigil until the government rescinds the order to suspend the licence of CNS 6 television station.
Last night’s exercise attracted another large crowd that included senior members of the main partner in the opposition coalition—A Partnership for National Unity.—among them Carl Greenidge and Campaign Manager Joseph Harmon.
One of the leading lights behind the vigil, Chartered Accountant Chris Ram, said that the vigil will continue for two hours every night—from 19:00 hours to 21:00 hours.
And a committee member said that contrary to reports in yesterday issue of Kaieteur News, the committee never issued an ultimatum to the government.
He said that it would have been impracticable for any protesting group to undertake any action by Monday as stated in the report.
The committee member said that all are agreed that the continued suspension of the licence would interfere with the opposition elections campaign. The committee said that the suspension would also compromise the freeness and fairness of the upcoming elections.
And at the height of last night’s exercise, the police attempted to arrest he drum and not the drummer. They abandoned the attempt after a stand off.
The vigil continues tonight on Main Street.
