Tenelec 1st Division 50-Over Berbice Cricket
The Tenelec inc First Division 50-Over Cricket Competition continued last Saturday in Berbice with Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets (RHTGG) staving off a spirited challenge from Blairmont Community Centre to win by a meager 8-run margin in their fifth round encounter.
The match between Memorex Bermine and Police was postponed due to the lawmen’s work commitments to the New Amsterdam Town Day, while the match between Skeldon Community Centre and West Berbice was not played due to Skeldon’s inability prepare their ground after hosting a school sports held activity on Friday.
In a match reduced to 35-overs because of a late start due to overnight and morning rain at Rose Hall Town, the hosts invited to take first strike by Blairmont, made a decent 183 for 8 in their 35-Overs before dismissing the visitors for 165 all out in 34.2.
Former Berbice Under-19 cricketer Khemraj Mahadeo (73) top-scored for Blairmont with his third consecutive half century in the competition, while Berbice all-rounder Rajiv Ivan made 26.
Off-spinner Devendra Lalsa took 3 for 27 from 7-Overs and off-spinner Shabeer Baksh 2 for 31 from 6-Overs for Blairmont who were soon 2 for 2 in their reply before Romesh Boodram and Deveshwari Prashad put on 33 for the 3rd wicket.
The loss of two more quick wickets left Blairmont precariously placed at 42 for 4 but Prashad added 41 with Omesh Mangal who fell for 21 at 83 for 5 before they further slipped to 114 for 7.
Wagar Hassan and Abdul Subhan put on 26 for the 8th wicket to take Blairmont to 141 for 8, still needing 34 in 3.3 overs and Hassan and Shabeer Baksh added 22 before Hassan departed for 30, leaving Baksh and Andrew Tageram to get 11 in the last over.
They only managed two before Baksh (9) fell to Dominic Rikhi to end the exciting contest as former Guyana Under-15 off-spinner Shailendra Shameer took 3 for 18 from 7-Overs and Guyana Under-19 off-spinner Loyydel Lewis 2 for 24 from 7-Overs.
