The annual Inter-zone/ Inter-school Swimming Championships commenced yesterday with Bishops High School, Queens College, Saint Stanislaus, Roses High, Marian Academy, Government Technical Institute (GTI), School of Nations, Business School, Winfer Gardens Primary and St. Margaret’s Primary in action at the Castellani Swimming Pool, Homestretch Avenue.
The swimming championships saw Bishops High School dominating to secure a lead ahead of their opponents. Bishops’ High, Athena Gaskin clocked 1:10.50 second in the girls 100m freestyle open as Ronaldo Rodrigues (1:03.48) and Britany Van Lange (1:04.16) won their freestyle in the U-18 category.
Queens College, Hannibal Jalem broke Bishops High School spell after clocking 1:07.02 seconds in the U-18 100m freestyle ahead of Onika George 1:18.76. Shamal Baksh 1:20.64 seconds won the boys U-16, Saint Stanislaus’ Elton Gaskin came second with 1:30.42.
Rodrigues was second to Dylan Nurse 30.92 seconds in the boys U-18 as Steffi De Nobrega was first in the U-18 girls breast stroke.
Bishops High School boys and girls swimming team decimated their opponents in the relays. The 4x50m girls’ team which comprised of Gaskin, George, Van Lange and Accalia Khan registered a time of 2:10.60 seconds to win as the boys’ team (Nurse, Baksh, Rodrigues and Albert Jessemy) clocked 2:18.16.

The Championships continues today with Cycling in the National Park at 10:00hrs with Inter-School Field Events commencing on Wednesday and Thursday. The Primary Inter- School Track events on Friday as Inter-zones field events are slated for October 10. The Championships will conclude on October 14 with the Inter-Zone Track Championships as the Inter-schools Track starts with Zone 1 on Tuesday 11, Zone 2 on Wednesday 12 and Zone 3, Thursday October, 13.
