The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) made its annual million-dollar donation to the Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc (HFHG).
The contribution was made yesterday on World Habitat Day 2011 when the organization completed its 500th house.
The donation was made to strengthen the 13-year partnership between the HFHG and GT&T. Receiving the contribution was the chairman of HFHG, William Harris and National Director, Rawle Small, from the Chief Finance Officer of GT&T, Royston Rachpaul.
Rachpaul stated how proud he was that the company supports the HFHG to make homes for the less fortunate. He added that GT&T will continue to make its annual donation as long as the business continues to be in operation.
Small said that the GT&T donation throughout the years of the partnership had made a great impact on the lives of many families. He stated that in future HFHG will offer GT&T the opportunity to directly support a home partner to benefit from the donation. He also plans to provide landline and cellular access for every home partner GT&T sponsors.
Over the years GT&T has demonstrated its commitment to national development and it is through socially proactive organizations like HFHG that GT&T is able to reach citizens most in need. It was also noted that for every one donation of $1M, at least two Guyanese families are assisted.
According to Harris, HFHG is now reaching out to Hinterland communities in Berbice, Essequibo and the Savannah. To honour the contribution, Small presented a plaque to the telephone company on behalf of the HFHG.
