The Mayor and City Council is once again appealing to residents of D’Urban Street, between Chapel and Victor Streets to remove their old vehicles from the road.
Mayor Hamilton Green when contacted recently said that the Council had moved a few vehicles but it has noticed that more and more old, unused vehicles are back on the road. According to the Mayor, the vehicles are a traffic hazard, since they occupy a large part of the already narrow road.
He said that on more than one occasion, the City Engineer’s Department had removed old vehicles, while some persons opted to find proper storage. However, soon after, persons would resume parking of derelict vehicles on the corner of the road.
“D’Urban Street is already a narrow street, you have the pavement, and then you have a long line of vehicles parked on the road and to add to that, the road is a two way road.”
The Mayor disclosed that he has written to the Guyana Police Force as well as the Ministry of Home Affair seeking permission to make D’Urban Street into a one-way street. This request the Mayor said has fallen on deaf ears.
Meanwhile, motorists have also aired their concern about the vehicles being parked along D’Urban Street. Some drivers claim that it has become treacherous for them to use that thoroughfare.
“When you driving through there, you got the old cars park up then you got traffic coming on one side. If you don’t know to drive, you deh bad. And then some parts of the street done bad,” one driver lamented.
Another one noted that this is causing persons to opt for using Norton Street which is less congested at times, but becomes more dangerous as a result of more speeding mini buses.
The Council is calling on the Guyana Police force to work with them in dealing with this issue.
