The quest to qualify for their first ever FIFA World Cup finals has received the biggest boost to date with the
availability of the Cort brothers, Leon and Carl and Ricky Shakes who have all played professionally in England.
The trio will bolster the chances of the Golden Jaguars for the remaining 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil qualifying matches in Group B, Guyana playing in return games away against Barbados on October 7 and Bermuda four days later.
Carl Cort will not be able to make this pair of matches due to try out at another club but is committed to representing Guyana.
Leon Cort and Ricky Shakes are expected to arrive in Guyana this evening from London along with Newton brothers, Jake and Howard and Alaniano Mounter.
Brief Bio –
Leon Terrance Anthony Cort (born 11 September 1979 in Southwark) is an English professional footballer currently playing for Burnley. He is a defender who wears the number 18 shirt for the Clarets. He is of Guyanese descent, and is the younger brother of Carl Cort. He is currently on a season long loan at Charlton Athletic.
Ricky Ulric Shakes (born 25 January 1985 in Brixton) is an English football player who is currently playing for Ebbsfleet United in the Conference National. He made over 110 appearances in Football League between 2005 and 2008.
Coach of the Golden Jaguars Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover commented on Cort and Shakes being a part of the programme: “I am very elated on behalf of the Technical team that Carl and Leon Cort as well as Ricky Shakes will be joining our programme as we seek to qualify for the
World Cup finals. I believe that it is a good time for them to join us and the high level that they will bring, having played at the highest level in England can only boost us going forward in our two away games and then the final home and away tie against Trinidad and Tobago in November.”
Dover believes that the Technical staff headed by Jamaal Shabazz will maximize on the level of experience the trio will bring to the Golden Jaguars along with that of Captain Christopher Nurse, Charles Pollard, the Newton brothers and others.
“These Professional players will be able to adopt to what we have been doing and will certainly boost the Guyana team, we are all really excited to welcome them on board as we continue to work towards our goal of making Guyana proud.”
One of the key defence players in Christopher Bourne will not be a part of the squad as he picked up an injury during a game last week.
