Assistant Commissioner of Police Balram Persaud did not give a statement of his account of the shooting incident which led to his driver being charged for the murder of drug counsellor Ralph Turpin.
A reliable source at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters informed this newspaper that the senior officer’s wife has also not given a statement.
“They both claimed that it is their right to refuse to give a statement,” the source told this newspaper.
The police had stated in a release shortly after the shooting that the Assistant Commissioner and his wife were cooperating with investigators.
Eyewitnesses had placed Persaud at the scene of the shooting and had even claimed that a woman who was with him had initiated the argument which eventually led to Turpin being shot dead.
Persaud, who has been relieved of the command of the Force’s West Demerara Division and is now performing duties at the department of development, had admitted that he was at the scene.
However, he reportedly claimed that he hurriedly left when he heard the gunshots but did not report the incident to the nearby police outpost or the Brickdam Police Station.
A source within the Guyana Police Force has since said that Persaud has denied being in the vicinity of the shooting.
This newspaper also understands that investigators were also unable to conduct an identification parade with the officer and his wife, and may resort to using photographs in the hope of obtaining a positive ID.
