– Ministry says
The Ministry of Education yesterday honoured over 1,600 students from several Georgetown schools for their attendance rate of 98 percent for the last school-year. Meanwhile, the attendance rate of students across the country is 80 percent. The Ministry is working towards achieving the attendance rate of 90 percent, says Education Minister Shaik Baksh.
He made those remarks at the Ministry’s Schools Welfare Services (Georgetown) Attendance Rally, held at the National Cultural Centre.
Utilizing the benchmark of the past five years, it was revealed that the attendance rate of students has increased countrywide. This, it was stressed, is significant for the education system since regular attendance allows for the completion of the curriculum, enhances knowledge of students, and facilitates the smooth transition from one level to another.
The regular attendance of students is directly linked to their academic performances at the end of each level, Minister Baksh noted.
He emphasized that this achievement is as a result of several initiatives of Government, including the school feeding programme, uniform assistance, and provision of transportation for students in certain areas.
In addition, the Ministry has been receiving support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to create child-friendly schools. The minister asserted that classrooms are becoming more children-oriented. He pointed out that there are challenges – for instance, in some schools the Ministry has to improve sanitation.
Minister Baksh stated that efforts are being made to strengthen the Schools’ Welfare Department to enhance its services. During the recent July-August vacation, officials from the Ministry visited communities to encourage parents to send their children to school. Moreover, the Guidance and Counsellors present in some schools are helping students to cope with their difficulties and to integrate themselves into the school system.
