After making good his escape on three occasions with his loot valuing in excess of $500,000 from the Eccles Nursery School, a young man tried his luck once again but was caught red-handed yesterday morning.
Reports are that some time around 06:30 hrs, a resident of Eccles noticed a man fetching items out of the nursery school.
The school is locked on weekends and therefore the woman was puzzled how this man could have gained access to the items in the school. It was then that she realized that he must have broken into the building and was a thief.
Kaieteur News understands that she then notified others who rushed to the scene as the man began to ‘get away’.
He was chased into Albouystown, Georgetown, where he tried to escape using routes that led to Smyth Street. However; passers-by were alerted with screams notifying them that the man was a thief trying to escape.
A taxi driver along with others chased the perpetrator a good distance before the man jumped into the nearby trench. He then continued his escape but was caught as the crowd of pursuers increased.
This newspaper was told that while the man was running away teachers who arrived at the scene noticed that he was wearing sneakers that belonged to a teacher of the school. The teacher had left his footwear in the school’s office.
Caught by the angry crowd who demanded that he tell them where the other items were, the thief stated that they were stored in a house at Albouystown, but when police ranks arrived on the scene, he changed his statements and said “I don’t know nothing about them things”.
He was subsequently arrested by the police ranks and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
One source told Kaieteur News that the man was seen fetching a five-gallon water bottle out of the school compound. Two cases of fruit juice that children were given to the school, were also missing from the office.
Also, a number of used juice boxes were found lying in the building when persons returned to investigate what happened there.
Over the first two-week period some of the items that the burglar(s) made off with include boxes of biscuits and Topco juice intended for the school snack programme; several CDs and DVDs; six CD players and two DVD players used as teaching aids; four fans, one 21” LG flat screen television; and cleaning agents such as soap powder and soap.
The first theft was discovered on the first day of school.
According to a source, the teachers were informed that a security guard would have been stationed at the school after the third incident, in light of the break-ins, but that did not materialize.
Apparently, the burglar(s) gained entry into the buildings via sliding open windows that face both buildings, unseen by passersby and covered by a shed.
Since those windows have wooden bars, it is believed the perpetrators exited the buildings via wooden shutters that were unsecured and allowed access to the back of the compound.
