Digicel (Guyana) remained consistent with its support for sports after presenting the Guyana Netball Association (GNA) with a whopping $750,000 to offset expenses for the staging of its National Open League which is anticipated to commence shortly.
The presentation ceremony which was conducted yesterday in the Boardroom of the sponsor’s Head Office saw in attendance Public Relations Manager of Digicel Shonnet Moore, Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope, Secretary of the GNA Shanomae Baptiste, Captain of the national team Kristel Lambert and League Co-ordinator Warren Wilson.
Wilson speaking at the occasion first thanked Digicel for its support towards the entity, adding that without the Company’s assistance it would be difficult for the sport to make the progress that is needed to guarantee development.
He added that the League is long overdue, pointing to the standard procedure of the GNA to host matches on the weekends whereas with the staging of the League, they will now be able to facilitate matches over a longer period thereby giving clubs and players the opportunity to enhance their chances of performing better and harnessing their skills during the competition.
He also stated that another aim of running an extended League is to stimulate interest in the sport which has been in a comatose for a long period prior to the installation of the new executive.
Among the clubs expected to participate are Emanie, Doves, All Stars, Eagles and Fearless Flyers.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Association Shanomae Baptiste in her remarks spoke of the Memorandum of Understanding that the two parties have entered into which includes the running of an Inter-Organisation and Schools Tournaments annually among the hosting of regular competitions to fast track the holistic development of the sport.
According to Baptiste, the GNA have already written to the Principals of schools asking their co-operation to confirm participation in the schools competition which will also include the Cyril Potter College of Education and the University of Guyana, while the same has been done to the responsible personnel attached to those invited to participate in the Inter-Organisation Tournament.
Baptiste revealed that shortly they would be inquiring about those organisations s and schools written to to ascertain their approval so that planning and implementation could start.
“At least 15 organisations including the bank of Guyana, Scotia Bank and most of the Ministries we’ve written to inviting them to participate in the competition,” Baptiste disclosed.
